Whole Body Hyperthermia
During the last decades basic research has
produced substantial evidence that the antitumor
cytotoxicity of selected drugs and radiotherapy
can be enhanced by heat exposure.
Randomized phase 3 trials have shown a benefit
for radiotherapy plus locoregional hyperthermia.
Whole body hyperthermia is not
yet standard in the treatment of systemic malignancies,
and the final proof of its effectiveness
by phase 3 studies is still missing.
years the method was hampered by insufficient
heating techniques. Only recently,
through the development of a radiant heat
device, gentle heating of patients was made
possible, thus allowing for the initiation of urgently
needed multicentre trials.
regarding inclusion and the treatment
technique of whole body hyperthermia in
combination with chemotherapy have to be
implemented to guarantee that the results of
these trials are meaningful.
Per our German contact: "What I found odd is that I found it as a link on the Oncotherm site( St.
Georg WBH), though the three manufacturers mentioned in the article are
Enthermics(not found on G web), Aquatherm(mattress), and Iratherm(Ardenne).
