Apoptosis in Prostatic Cancer Cells with Maitake D-fraction Extract: Potential Alternative Therapy
A study by Hiroshi Tazaki, M.D., Ph.D., et al
Department of Urology, New York Medical College, Valhall, NY
This study was conducted using prostate cancer cells, not human beings. The authors looked at the "proposed antitumor effect" of a Beta-glucan compound called Grifon which is extracted from Maitake mushrooms.
These human cells were treated with varying concentrations of a highly purified preparation. Almost complete cell death was attained with one of the dosages.
The researchers concluded: "A bioactive Beta-glucan, (an) extract from Maitake mushroom, Grifon Pro D-fraction, GD, demonstrates a cytotoxic effect via oxidative stress on prostatic cancer cells in vitro, leading to apoptosis."
They also noted that Vitamin C may help this substance to work even better.
The company president, Michael Shirota, stated that the results of the above study were very exciting since the substance was now proven not only as an immune booster but also an apoptosis inducer.
Grifon Pro D-fraction has been under the FDA approved clincial study (IND#54,489) on advanced cancer patients with prostate and breast cancer.
