An edge with squalamine
Magainin Pharmaceuticals of Plymouth Meeting, Pa., said that 11 of 36
patients (31%) with Stage IIIb and IV non-small-cell lung cancer in
a phase-2a trial responded with partial responses to squalamine given
in combination with carboplatin and paclitaxel.
This compares with a
15% historical response rate to chemotherapy alone, according to
Squalamine is an anti-angiogenic aminosterol, a class of
small molecules discovered in the dogfish shark, that is also being
investigated for ovarian cancer, prostate cancer, pediatric solid
tumors, brain tumors, and fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
