The Project received some information in the mail about this product/plant. Here it is:
Rhodalia Rosea is also known as golden root. It is a member of the family Crassulacae, a family of plants native to the arctic regions of eastern Siberia. It grows at altitudes of 11,000 to 18,000 feet above sea level. As an herb, it grows approximately 2 1/2 feet high and has yellow flowers whose smell is similar to attar of rosese, thus imparting its name.
Rhodiola would be classified as an adaptogen-meaning it has a nonspecific ability to assist the body to withstand stress and maintain normalcy even when threatened with pathological conditions. As such it is similar to a number of other herbs including Siberian ginseng, reishi mushroom, ginseng, codonopsis and ashwagandha.
As an adaptogen, Rhodiola both stimulates and protects the immune system by reinstating homeostasis (metabolic balance) in the body. It also increases the natural killer cells (NK) in the stomach and spleen. This action may be due to its ability to normalize hormones by modulating the release of glucocorticoid into the body.
Although this article presents no study references, it does mention a book called: "Arctic Root (Rhodiola Rosea): The Powerful New Ginseng Alternative" by Carl Germano, R.D., C.N.S., L.D.N. and Zakir Ramazanov, PhD, published by Kensington Health Books. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT ARCTIC ROOT is the tradename for a product manufactured by Svenska Ortmedicinska Institutet.
It also has potent antioxidant properties. According to the information sent Russian researchers have found that the oral administration of Rhodiola inhibited tumor growths in rats by 39% and decreased metastasis by 50%. It improved urinary tissue and immunity in patients with bladder cancer. In other experiments with various types of cancer, including adenocarcinomas, the use of extracts of Rhodiola Rosea resulted in significant increased survival rate. THE PROJECT WILL TRY TO FOLLOW UP ON THIS TO OBTAIN THE ORIGINAL STUDIES.
Only 14 of the nearly 200 different Rhodiola species have been studied for biochemical activity. This species contains phenylpropanoids, proanthocyanidins and flavinoids.
A supplier of raw Rhodiola Rosea is listed in this material. Pharmline Inc. 41 Bridge Street, PO Box 291 Florida, NY 10921 (914) 651-4443 Fax (914)651-6900.
Some companies currently sell Rhodiola-Nature's Plus. Natural Balance, Nutraceutical Corporation, Quest IV Health Products, Solgar and Carotec.
