PDT for Chest Wall Tumors

ABSTRACT: Photodynamic therapy palliation of chest wall progression from breast cancer in heavily radiated treatment fields

Purpose/Objective: Despite advances in the treatment of breast cancer, a significant minority of patients will develop symptomatic chest wall recurrence.

Radiation therapy salvage is possible, but patients often re-recur and reach radiation dose limits.

We examined the potential role of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in this particular patient population.

Conclusions: PDT offers gratifying clinical and cosmetic response in patients who have chest wall progression despite receiving high cumulative radiation doses.

The drug/light combination employed appears to offer excellent response rates that are durable without inducing painful fibrotic tissue changes.

PDT should be considered as a viable salvage modality for these unfortunate individuals.
