Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, Grand Rapids, Michigan September 23, 2005

Report by Holly Kiger, RN, MN

Collaboratively presented by Saint Mary's Health Care, Wege Institute's Integrative Medicine Program (www.wegeinstitute.org), and Lacks Cancer Center, this conference provided an overview of complementary therapy in cancer care including the use of acupuncture, Traditional Chinese Medicine, nutrition, movement therapy and exercise, and “Optimal Healing Environments”.

According to their website, “this program was presented to benefit professionals in the fields of general medicine, oncology medicine, family practice, nursing, mental health, preventive medicine, rehabilitation, nutrition, pharmacy, complementary therapy, and other healthcare fields with an interest in the research and application of complementary therapies in cancer treatment and healing.”

INTEGRATIVE ONCOLOGY BEGINNING A DIALOGUE Speaker: Thomas E. Gribbin, MD Medical Director, Richard J. Lacks Sr. Cancer Center

Dr. Gribbin began with an overview of the Lacks Model of Care. (http://www.smcancercenter.com/) He discussed the role of the cancer resource specialist (a medical social worker) designed to address the physical, psychological, and spiritual work of the cancer patient, and their family.

In their institute the cancer resource specialist performs a systematic assessment of needs and resources with every new patient, follows them in the journey, and is the “master of the menu”. He also discussed their use of a website to assist patients with making decisions about adjuvant therapies: www.adjuvantonline.com
