As retold in a newsletter called News On Earth, Public Concern Foundation, 175 Fifth Avenue New York, NY 10010 ($15 per year, seniors and students $12)
One of the selling points for these new GM (Genetically Modified also called GE Genetically Engineered) foods is that the farmer will need less pesticides. Apparently this has not been shown to date. In over half the fields surveyed by the USDA (US Dept. of Agriculture), farmers using crops modified to contain genes resistant to pests, have had to add as much pesticides as on non-modified crops. In two-thirds of the fields, there had been no improvement in yields as compared to conventional crops.
So why bother?
This same article in News On Earth also pointed out that Europe continues to resist GM foods from the United States. By the year 2004 virtually ALL US food exports will be GM or combined with bulk commodities that have been altered.
To date, we still have no regulations concerning labelling of this food. Write to FDA or visit their website www.fda.gov and let them know how you feel about GM foods.
BUY AND EAT ORGANIC.
