Good Sources for Protein, Vitamins and Minerals

This information was taken in part from an article in "GreatLife" magazine, September 1999, Vol.2 No.9 GLMailbox@aol.com

The category of green foods would include:

Chlorophyll-pigment that causes green in plants. It can act as a detoxifying agent for the live and digestive tract. Shown to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides. It can stimulate the productin of hemoglobin, oxygenate and energize the body. Chlorophyll is found naturally in the following:

Spirulina-Supposedly the oldest living plant on earth, loaded with carotenoids, essential fatty acids and digestive enzymes. It is also the highest source of protein at 60% and a good source of Vitamin B12. It is sold in healthfood stores, natural pharmacies, etc. in powder, tables and capsules.

Chlorella-also an ancient algae. Richest source of chlorophyll,50-60% protein, all eight amino acids, vitamins, minerals, fiber and nucleic acids DNA and RNA. A study published in 1987 in "Artery" showed that it lowered cholesterol (due to high omega-3 content). It is also a powerful chelating agent as it binds to toxic substances and forces them to leave the body. It has a unique ability to strengthen the immune system, called CGF chlorella growth factor, that enables it to stimulate the production of white blood cells.

Anns' NOTE: May be useful as a complementary therapy for those undergoing conventional therapy and at risk of reduced white blood count. Many green drinks that are sold in health food stores are using organic ingredients. This is a great development. They include vegetables, herbs, algae and other nutrients and are easily digested and absorbed.

Wheatgrass is another green that is juiced. It requires a special juicer and is a very strong detoxifier. Ann Wigmore was one of the first to promote this substance. She used it to build strength against many illnesses. She recommended drinking it and using it as an enema. She believed in raw foods- sprouts eaten in many ways including a fermented drink, meatless diet using fruits, vegetables, nuts and sprouted grains.

Many people believe they have regained their health using her recommended LIVING FOODS plan.

Below find a link to the Ann Wigmore Foundation and one source for organic wheatgrass. Many healthfood stores do carry wheatgrass and will juice it.
