NCCN: Sentinel Node Biopsy Procedure for Breast Cancer Upgraded
in Treatment Guidelines
[03/04/2002; Doctor's Guide]
HOLLYWOOD, FL -- March 4, 2002 -- Despite lack of definitive
evidence that sentinel node biopsy improves outcomes for
women with Stage 1 or Stage 2 breast cancer, the
National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) has upgraded
its breast cancer treatment guidelines to allow physicians the
option of performing the procedure rather than complete axillary
"Even though sentinel node biopsy lacks the highest
level of evidence that it improves survival, we have included
it as a treatment option in our breast cancer treatment pathways,"
said Robert Carlson, MD, professor of medicine at Stanford University
Medical Center, one of the 19 member organizations of the NCCN.
The new treatment algorithm was unveiled yesterday at the 7th
annual NCCN meeting to revise guidelines and review outcomes
