Cochrane Collaboration:  Evidence-based Healthcare

January 2011 In January 2011, the World Health Organization (WHO) awarded The Cochrane Collaboration status as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in official relations with the WHO at the WHO's executive board meeting, establishing a partnership with formalised communication between the two organisations.

July 2010 Email from the UK This message is to share some good news about the importance of systematic reviews, which is also an example of the impact that the work inside in The Cochrane Collaboration can have on healthcare research, beyond our contribution to knowledge about the effects of interventions.

Today, the Lancet have announced that they will ask authors of all research reports submitted after August 1 2010 to put their work into the context of what has gone before, by either reporting their own, up-to-date systematic review or citing a recent systematic review done by others. The editorial is available here (see below if the hyperlink does not work). This is important recognition of systematic reviews as a key element in understanding the findings from all new research.

The Lancet's decision was influenced by work done over the last twelve years at the UK Cochrane Centre, together with Iain Chalmers of the James Lind Library. Our latest findings are also published in the Lancet today and available here (see below also). These show that most reports of randomised trials continue to provide readers with inadequate information on other relevant research. We hope that the Lancet policy will improve things and will lead to even greater prominence of systematic reviews across the research literature.

"The Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence-based healthcare".

CUE (Ann Fonfa, president of Annie Appleseed Project is a member of this group:

Consumers United for Evidence-based Healthcare's mission is to promote the health of populations and the quality of individual healthcare by:

Empowering consumers, public health policy makers, and healthcare providers to make informed decisions based on the best current evidence through research, education, and advocacy.

CUE members:

Obtain training about critical appraisal, EBHC, and the Cochrane Collaboration;

Participate in CUE projects and initiatives;

Attend annual CUE meetings;

Educate their constituencies about critical appraisal and EBHC;

Provide consumer input into the Cochrane Collaboration’s systematic reviews of healthcare interventions. This video was produced at the Sao Paulo, Brazil Cochrane Colloquium where so many consumers were represented - many meeting each other for the first time. Ann Fonfa, founder of The Annie Appleseed Project can be heard (and seen) speaking about her poster on Evidence Gaps as well as CAM.
